An unexpected win at Gawler greyhounds on Father’s Day, put a smile on trainer Kel Douglas’s face.

In a Grade 6 event over the 400m journey, box 1 dog Lektra Val momentarily took the lead, before Oracle Of Omaha (2) took over, just ahead of Dashing Joker (5). Oracle Of Omaha was able to gradually increase it’s lead over Dashing Joker, and was never troubled in the run to win convincingly by 5 ½ lengths, in the time of 23.12 secs. Second was Dashing Joker for Kevin Murnane of Lewiston, while reserve runner Polished Lover, starting from box 8, ran third for Colin Swain of Paralowie.

Oracle Of Omaha is raced and trained by Kel Douglas from Strathalbyn. A regular visitor to the Gawler track, Kel was somewhat shocked by tonight’s win, as he said that the black dog usually “plays up” in the boxes, which disadvantages him at the race start, but tonight was the first time he has jumped well. The Oracle has been in Kel’s care for some 16 months, and was purchased following a win at Ballarat. Kel has shown a lot of patience with Oracle Of Omaha, as this is only his third win for Kel in that time, but he does so because he is such a nice dog to work with, who enjoys the racing.

Introduced to greyhound racing by a friend while working in Tasmania in 1980, Kel has a small team in work, but really enjoys the sport, which he described as a great way to stop “sitting in front of the TV”. And perhaps now that Oracle Of Omaha has discovered the way to win, he might just continue.

Now that the Gawler Show has finished, we are back to the normal Tuesday afternoon and Sunday evening race meetings. So why not join us at our great facility for exciting racing action.
