LANDING A TREBLE
Gawler greyhounds rarely holds a race meeting on a Wednesday morning, but did so when the normal meeting at Angle Park was transferred, due to upgrades to track lighting being undertaken there. Because of the hot weather expected later in the day, the meeting was also scheduled at the unusual time of a 10am start.
The change didn’t affect trainer Ben Rawlings, who was the most successful trainer on the day, leading in a treble. Ben’s first winner came in race 4, when Jiggy’s Luck led all the way from box 5, running a best of the day time of 22.77 secs, in a 400m race for Grade 6 greyhounds. Jiggy’s Luck is one of three greyhounds from the same Barcia Bale x Flying Cheryl litter that Ben trains for the Jiggy Wells syndicate, with all three having won races. One of the three, Jumping Jiggy was Ben’s only unplaced runner today, giving him a great tally of 3 wins from 4 starters
Two races later, Ben’s runner was the Whyalla owned Deputy Speaker, who led most of the way from box 6, scoring by 2 lengths in convincing fashion, also in a good time of 22.92 secs.
Ben’s final winner for the day was in race 9, when Elite Chaos went straight to the front from box 7, winning by 5 lengths. As well as Elite Chaos and Deputy Speaker both running the same time of 22.92 secs, they are also from the same Elite State x Mighty Chaos litter, and have won 11 races each.
Ben is no stranger to training winners, having exceeded more than 100 each year for the last 5 years, and he is off to a good start with 9 winners already in 2018. He has not been afraid to travel either, having won races interstate, on both sides of the country.
Riverland based Nicole Price was close to emulating Ben’s result, but had to be content with one winner and four seconds from the five runners she brought to the track. Nicole’s winner came in race 7 over the 531m trip, when box 1 starter Bone Jarrer won by just under a length. The closest second for Nicole was Sheza Nitro, going down by just a neck to Fast Fyfe in the following race
Due to the current hot spell in SA, the meeting due for Sunday evening has been cancelled, but we are back to our normal Tuesday afternoon and Sunday evening schedule. Please check the times as they may alter at short notice.
